JIS educators work in a professional learning community to continuously improve teaching practice for the benefit of the students at JIS in pursuit of our Mission, Vision, Values and Dispositions.
The Library Media Specialist (LMS) is instrumental in the design and delivery of the Elementary School’s information literacy program in a manner that brings the JIS Mission, Vision, Values, Dispositions and library philosophy to life at the Elementary School. The LMS is an instructional leader, a teacher librarian, a curriculum designer, a consultant and a collaborator.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCES and ATTRIBUTES
- Minimum Master’s degree, preferably in Library Science
- Credential in the related field (preferably in Library Science) or library certification
- Minimum five years of experience in the subject area
- Experience in a school with a well-defined Elementary School philosophy – International setting preferred
- Experience as a Librarian in an Elementary School
- Experience using age appropriate technological tools to enhance teaching and learning
- Experience with, and commitment to, a Professional Learning Community and departmental work
- Versed in documenting student learning via innovative approaches
- Passion for Elementary School
- Clear commitment to Child Protection, safety, service learning and environmental stewardship
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Being an advocate for the library and promoting a love of reading
- Creating a contemporary, flexible and welcoming environment for active learning, research and collaboration
- Enabling the library to serve as a hub for reading and media/technology services
- Supporting teachers and students in teaching and learning through support of units of study and curriculum design
- Team teaching or providing support to classroom teachers in support of learning various elements of the research cycle in the classrooms of upper elementary
- Providing teaching and learning on the library, use of resources, books and reading in developmentally appropriate ways
- Promoting ethical use of resources
- Facilitating communication that promotes a trans-disciplinary approach
- Acting as a resource for parents, staff and teachers
- Planning and implementing programs that instruct all stakeholders in information literacy, research skills and digital citizenship
- Demonstrating competency in selection, acquisition, circulation and maintenance of a balanced, relevant, focused international collection
- Coordinating library-based events which promote reading and books
- Guiding students in their reading choices
- Engaging with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support the development of curriculum and contemporary pedagogy
- Serving as a member of Technology and Library Media Team
- Maintaining library networks and membership in relevant organizations
- Supporting the use of instructional technology and remaining current with applications that compliment a 1:1 school
- Continuing one’s professional learning through study, attendance at workshops and conferences, and involvement in professional organizations
- Providing workshops for teachers during professional development days
- Mentoring and supervising Host Country library support personnel
- Managing the automated library system and related technology
- Developing and administering the Elementary School (ES) library collections and budget to create a dynamic library that supports student learning
- Maintaining a positive, professional school climate by building positive interpersonal relationships
- Maintaining an open attitude toward new ideas and accepting of others whose experiences, opinions and beliefs may differ
